Dental Sealants for Kids
Strong protection for growing smiles.
Kid-Focused Dentistry
At Farm Park Pediatric Dentistry, we help children keep their smiles cavity-free with gentle, effective dental sealants. Sealants add a thin, protective coating to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where tooth decay most often begins. This simple, painless procedure prevents plaque bacteria, food particles, and bits of food from collecting in the deep grooves of molars — keeping your child’s teeth healthy for years to come.
We listen. We care. We work together to build lifelong oral health for every child.
What Are Dental Sealants?
A dental sealant is a thin layer of clear or tooth-colored resin applied to the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Think of it as a protective lid that shields back molars and premolars from bacteria and acids that can cause cavities.
The sealant material flows easily into the grooves of the back teeth, where a toothbrush often can’t reach. Once it’s painted on, the dentist uses a special light to harden the coating — creating a durable barrier that guards against tooth decay and makes daily brushing even more effective.
This treatment is quick, comfortable, and designed specifically for young children with developing baby teeth and permanent molars.
Why Sealants Matter
Even with proper oral hygiene and fluoride treatments, the chewing surfaces of the molars are highly vulnerable to decay. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and American Dental Association both recommend sealants for children at high risk of cavities, typically applied when the first permanent molars erupt — around six years of age — and again for the second molars around age twelve.
Sealants can reduce the risk of cavities by up to 80%, making them one of the best investments in preventive dental care. They also help lower the need for future dental treatments, such as fillings or crowns, and protect tooth enamel from acids and sugars found in everyday diets.
Our Safe, Kid-Friendly Sealant Process
At Farm Park Pediatric Dentistry, we use BPA-free sealant materials and top-quality plastic coatings that are safe for every child. The process takes only a few minutes per tooth and requires no drilling or numbing.
Here’s what to expect:
- The teeth are gently cleaned and dried.
- A liquid sealant material is carefully brushed into the deep pits and grooves.
- A curing light is used to harden the coating.
- The new protective coating is checked to ensure a smooth finish.
Once applied, sealants can last for several years, providing continuous protection through regular dental checkups. During visits, Dr. Okoh and our dental professionals check each sealant’s condition and reapply if needed to maintain strong, healthy teeth.
Comfort for Every Child
Our caring pediatric dentist and team make the experience fun and stress-free. For children with a sensitive gag reflex, an active tongue, or special needs, we take extra time to ensure comfort at every step. Parents are encouraged to stay with their child during the appointment, helping build confidence and familiarity with good dental hygiene routines.
Protect your child’s teeth with safe, effective dental sealants — a simple way to prevent cavities and promote a lifetime of good oral health.
