Tooth Extractions for Kids
Gentle, compassionate care when removal is the best solution.
Kid-Focused Dentistry
Sometimes, even with the best preventive care, a baby tooth needs to be removed. Whether due to severe tooth decay, infection, or dental trauma, our team at Farm Park Pediatric Dentistry ensures every tooth extraction is handled with care, comfort, and reassurance.
We listen. We care. We work together to make every experience positive and stress-free — for both children and parents.
When a Tooth Extraction Is Needed
The most common reasons for removing a child’s tooth include:
- Severe decay that has reached the pulp of the tooth
- Infection that cannot be treated with a filling or pulp therapy
- Trauma that damages a tooth beyond repair
- Preparing the mouth for orthodontic treatment or to create enough space for incoming permanent teeth
In such cases, removing the affected tooth is the safest way to prevent further complications or the spread of infection. While “tooth removal” may sound intimidating, it’s often the best course of action to restore your child’s comfort and protect their overall oral health.
Our Gentle Extraction Process
At Farm Park Pediatric Dentistry, every extraction process is personalized to your child’s age, comfort level, and unique needs. We use local anesthesia and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to ensure your child remains calm and comfortable throughout the procedure. For anxious children or complex cases, we also offer safe sedation dentistry options.
Once the local anesthetic takes effect, Dr. Okoh carefully removes the problematic tooth while maintaining the surrounding gum tissue and adjacent teeth. The process is quick, precise, and designed to minimize discomfort. Our gentle communication, using child-friendly explanations like “helping the tooth get healthy again,” helps little ones feel at ease from start to finish.
What Happens After a Tooth Extraction
Following an extraction, we’ll review detailed aftercare instructions to help your child heal comfortably and prevent infection. The healing process is usually simple and smooth when parents follow these tips:
- Encourage your child to rest and avoid hard foods for a day or two.
- Keep the extraction site clean with gentle rinsing and plenty of water.
- Use soft foods like yogurt, applesauce, and mashed potatoes until the area feels normal.
- Continue regular brushing, avoiding the extraction site for the first 24 hours.
Most children return to their normal routines quickly, often feeling relief from the tooth pain that led to the procedure.
Preserving Space for Future Teeth
If the extracted tooth is a primary tooth lost before its natural time, we may recommend a space maintainer to keep enough room open for the permanent tooth. This simple step supports proper alignment, helps prevent crowded teeth, and encourages natural jaw development as your child grows.
Our goal is always to preserve your child’s healthy teeth whenever possible — and when extraction is the only option, we make it a calm, positive experience focused on comfort and care.
If your child is experiencing persistent tooth pain, swelling, or signs of infection, our caring team can help determine whether a tooth extraction is needed. We’ll walk you through every step and provide gentle, effective care for your child’s smile.
